  • Tony Gwynn, San Diego Padres

His career batting average of .336 ranks 19th on the all-time list. His eight National League batting titles ties him with Hall of Famer Honus Wanger.

His manager calls him, "The best pure hitter in the game." Bruce Bochy credits Tony's passion for the game along with his hard work ethic that enables him to consistently make good contact with the ball. We also asked for Dodger great and current Padre coach Davey Lopes what makes Tony such a great hitter: Davey Lopes on Tony Gwynn

Tony's years of playing experience have been beneficial to the young San Diego Padres in other ways. Explains Manager Bruce Bochy, Bochy's comments:

How does all this hype about being one of the greatest hitters of all time affect Tony? Not much apparently. He would just as soon trade the batting titles for another shot at the World Series, having appeared in the Fall Classic twice, during his second full year in the big leagues and 1998.
