Despite a paltry 35.8% shooting performance and a three point halftime deficit, the Bulls exploded for 27 points in the third quarter and nervously coasted to a 85-79 victory over the Pacers.  Luc Longley has his best output of the playoffs with a dozen points, eight rebounds, and three assists.  Ron Harper added 15 points, while Dennis Rodman double dipped with 11 points and 10 boards.   As a team the Bulls committed grand larceny 19 times, tying a franchise playoff record.

Michael Jordan adorns the media credential for the Eastern Finals against IndianaAgain, the Bulls left the gate a little slow.  Down seven at halftime, they poured in 59 points in the second half to outrun the Pacers 104-98 at hold serve on their home court.  Jordan scorched Indiana for 41 points, including 14 in the third period.  A key factor in the game was Scottie Pippen's ferocious defense on Mark Jackson.  Chicago badgered the Pacers into 19 turnovers, something that did not sit well with coach Larry Bird.  He complains about the refs -

Michael Jordan's 30 points wasn't enough to hold back Reggie Miller's 28 points. Miller,  along with five other Pacers in double figures as Indiana took the first of two home games.  Reggie hit three 3-pointers and two clutch free throws  as Indiana took charge down the stretch as fended off several Bulls rallies.  When Jordan missed one of two free throws with 12 seconds left, Indiana realized they had dodged a bullet.

The Pacers used a monster fourth quarter to hold serve at home and even up the series.  Despite five players in double figures, the Bulls wilted in the final period.  Rik Smits had his best effort of the playoffs with 26 points to lead Indiana.  Phil Jackson got on his soapbox to decry the officiating, which reeked at best, and in the final seconds featured a mysterious offensive foul on Rodman, and a dreadful "no call" on Miller for pushing off on Jordan.

The Pacers pulled another rabbit out of a hat and edged the Bulls by the narrowest of margins.  This was a closely fought contest with many ties and lead changes.  Once again, Larry Bird conjured up the voodoo spirits causing Michael to slip in the lane and the gremlins muted the Hue Hollins led officiating crew.   Despite Jordan 35 points, including 10-11 from the FT line, Chicago was unable to break serve on the road. Rik Smits hit 11 of 12 baskets for 25 points and  Dale Davis added 19 pts and 8 rebs. as the Pacers won the battle of turnovers 7 to 13.

Toni Kukoc scored 14 of his 21 points in the third quarter as the Bulls advanced to the NBA Finals for the sixth time in eight years.  Despite Jordan assurances after game six that Chicago would win on Wednesday, many members of the media remained skeptical and were ready to write the possible end of Michael's career.  After the game Jordan commented, "We had to fight for everything we got."

  • Listen to MJ's post game comments about how everyone had to dig deep down and come up with the extra effort necessary to win the decisive game seven.
