The Mixtape #3: Black Sabbath blew out the power

Issue #3: Black Sabbath, The Moody Blues, The Five Americans, Hypnotic Floor and The Nude Party, plus a Moody Blues cassette from Steve’s collection.

Tape of the week: my Moody Blues cassette. It holds three albums, Every Good Boy Deserves Favour, To Our Children’s Children’s Children and A Question of Balance.

Every Friday, The Mixtape brings you five songs picked by people, from the sixties to this year. Watch this week’s video below, hear all five on our playlist, or put on Acid Flashback Radio and let us do the picking.

1. Live

Fairies Wear Boots

Black Sabbath, Paranoid, 1970 (live in Paris, 1970)

Black Sabbath in Paris in 1970, from a fan restoration of concert footage with remastered audio. It closes the Paranoid album, and it is a good way to hear the band at full volume in the same year they first hit America.

2. Deep track

Nice To Be Here

The Moody Blues, Every Good Boy Deserves Favour, 1971

Ray Thomas wrote it and sang it, and the idea is pure storybook, a concert played by woodland creatures. It is an album track, not a single, and it is on the tape up top. It was also our Song of the Day.

3. Psych nugget

I See the Light

The Five Americans, 1966

It was the most requested song in Dallas before the band even had a record in stores. The Five Americans started out as The Mutineers at a small Oklahoma college, and this one reached No. 26 on the Billboard Hot 100. It was our Song of the Day.

4. New psych

The Miller’s Wife

Hypnotic Floor, from The Friendly Moss Forest Creatures Lived Happily In Perpetual Twilight

A Vienna band that mixes psych, kraut and prog rock with fuzzy riffs and spaced-out synths. Eric plays them on Psychedelic Psaturday this weekend.

5. Rock now

Walk That Walk

The Nude Party, Look Who’s Back, 2026

A tip from a friend’s daughter. The Nude Party formed in 2012 at Appalachian State in Boone, North Carolina, put out three albums on New West, and are now on their own with Look Who’s Back.

Hear all five

Every song from this issue is on The Mixtape, Vol. 1, our own playlist. Five new songs every Friday, fifty in all, then Vol. 2 starts fresh.

AThis weekend on Acid Flashback Radio

Ken from Mississippi takes over Acid Flashback Friday for all three hours with deep tracks, old and new, and Psychedelic Psaturday with DJ Kaigem includes Hypnotic Floor from this week’s mixtape. See the full weekend lineup.

BToday in Rock History

On October 30, 1970, Black Sabbath played what is widely credited as their first U.S. show, at Glassboro State College in New Jersey. The band arrived late and, by most accounts, knocked out the power. Read Today in Rock History for October 30.
