Friday
Acid Flashback Friday with DJ Uncle Steve (noon ET) features birthday salutes involving members of the Average White Band, Roxy Music and Fotheringay, and marks the anniversary of the Beatles’ Abbey Road, released September 26, 1969. More on this day in rock history.
Saturday
Psychedelic Psaturday with DJ Kaigem (1 pm ET): Eric opens this week’s show with a deep track, Three Dog Night’s “Fire Eater” from their 1970 album Naturally. From there he heads into San Francisco’s Tripsichord Music Box, Britain’s Rainbow Ffolly with “Sun and Sand” from Sallies Fforth, and newer psych from Shrimp Olympics.
Then comes Austin’s The Golden Dawn, a band that got a raw deal. Their only album, Power Plant, was recorded in 1966, well before The 13th Floor Elevators’ Easter Everywhere, but their label, International Artists, held it back until after the Elevators’ record came out in 1968. Critics called it a copycat, and the band broke up soon after. Chicago’s own Shadows of Knight bring their 1966 garage classic “Gloria,” and the set rolls on with Beans and The Glass Family. Eric will tell you about these bands and many more, during the show, so tune in and turn on.
The Flower Power Hour with Ken & MJ: three hours with “10 Blues Rock Artists That Changed the World,” a salute to Neil Young’s After the Gold Rush, and an Allman Brothers Band feature, plus comedy and spoken word from Dan Rather, Tommy Chong, Monty Python, the Firesign Theatre and more.
Sunday
Sunday Time Warp with Bart Shore (3 pm ET): This week’s Time Warp (Show #761) has Flying Machine’s “Smile a Little Smile for Me,” BTO’s “Let It Ride,” and Mose Allison’s “Young Man’s Blues,” the song The Who later made their own. Bart puts John Lennon’s “How” right next to Roxy Music’s version of Lennon’s “Jealous Guy,” and there’s also Edison Lighthouse’s “Love Grows (Where Rosemary Goes)” and The Zombies’ “Friends of Mine” from Odessey and Oracle.
Psychedelic Time Warp Show #12 (4 pm ET): a generic show with Aerosmith, Jethro Tull, Simple Minds and Led Zeppelin, live Pink Floyd and Grateful Dead, and comedy from George Carlin.
All Hand Mixed Vinyl with Bill Fitzhugh (6 pm ET), now in its permanent home on Sunday nights. What do Lucretia McEvil, Casey Jones, and Johnny B. Goode have in common? Nothing I can think of, but they’re all in this week’s chapter of All Hand Mixed Vinyl. In the top half of the show we’ll hear how Chris Stainton of Grease Band fame saved some time and effort by using the same piano riff for Joe Cocker and The Who. Then we’ll hear Roy Bittan playing not for the E Street Band but for David Bowie, before the whole set turns into a freight train barreling down the tracks.
At the break we’ll flip the album over with help from Dave Mason, then learn a few things about Jim Guercio, who produced Chad & Jeremy and The Illinois Speed Press before going on to produce three of the acts in the second half-hour of the show. Some good segues are coming your way, so go sit beneath the tree by the railroad tracks and give it a listen.
The Grateful Dead Hour with David Gans (7 pm ET): more from the Grateful Dead’s February 17, 1979 show at Oakland Coliseum Arena, Bobby Weir & Wolf Bros in Memphis in 2023, and “Jackaroe” from Reckoning.
The Zecom Hour with Bart Shore (8 pm ET): This week Bart spins Alice Cooper, Del Shannon, The Rolling Stones, The Moody Blues, T. Rex, The Byrds, and much more.
