The Mixtape #1: Press play

The Mixtape Issue #1
InternetFM · Acid Flashback Radio
A handwritten cassette J-card from an early 80s mixtape
Tape of the week: an early ’80s mix. U2, Talking Heads, the Chameleons, Echo & the Bunnymen, Big Country, Let’s Active, Missing Persons, the English Beat, Berlin, Romeo Void, the Church and Icehouse.

Press play.

Hey now,

That’s a real tape up there, off my shelf. Side A opens with U2’s “Seconds” and Talking Heads’ “Naive Melody.” Side B starts with Echo & the Bunnymen and ends with the Church and Icehouse. Somebody spent an evening with two tape decks getting that order just right, and it still holds up.

Every week we’ll open with a different tape from the collection. Some lean classic rock, some lean new wave, some lean deep psych. That range is the whole point. Got an old mixtape of your own? Hit reply with a photo of the J-card and it might be next week’s tape.

And every Friday, you get a new mixtape from us. Five songs, picked by people. One nugget from the sixties, one emerging artist, one new psych record, one deep track, and one live cut. Plus what’s on Acid Flashback Radio this weekend and the newest stories from InternetFM.

Welcome to issue number one.

I Had Too Much to Dream (Last Night)

The Electric Prunes · 1966

That swooping sound at the top is fuzz guitar played backwards. The single came out sixty years ago next month and later opened Lenny Kaye’s Nuggets compilation, the record that gave garage psych its name.

Six Foot Blonde · from Hummingbird (2026)

Eric tipped me off to Hummingbird, the brand-new album from this indie-soul-rock sextet, out September 25. Julia Rusyniak, the six-foot blonde herself, fronts the band, and they made a video for this one too.

Annihilator

DOOM GONG · from MEGAGONG

Seven players, two drummers sharing one kick drum, and a mellotron riff with a 1972 heavy metal snarl. Frontman John Anderson told us how it all fits together. Turn this one up.

Good Times Are So Hard to Find

Blue Cheer · BC #5 The Original Human Being, 1970

Most people know Blue Cheer for the loudest “Summertime Blues” ever cut. By their fifth album they had wandered somewhere stranger. DJ Kaigem opened Psychedelic Psaturday with this one.

Crime of the Century

Supertramp · Hammersmith Odeon, London, 1975

The closer from the newly restored concert film. John Helliwell told us the last sax note climbs to a top B that gave him trouble even in the studio. Listen for it.

Interview

A Conversation with John Helliwell of Supertramp

Eric and I got Supertramp’s sax man on the phone to talk about the restored 1975 Hammersmith concert film. He told us how he ended up as the band’s onstage talker, why Rick Davies was the finest musician he ever worked with, and about the night the band hit a train wreck at Montreux with Emerson, Lake & Palmer listening.

DOOM GONG Builds a Universe of Their Own

A Louisville seven-piece that calls its sound “Denim Psyche.” The band had its name before it owned a single gong. Frontman John Anderson tells us how the gongs, the two drummers and three albums of mythology all came together.
