3D Stop QUARANTUNES

I’m everybody’s Uncle Marty, as The Award Winning 3D RadioActivity hits episode 534, with more of our QUARANTUNES advising all to as they say in London to “Mind The Gap” only in this case it is social distancing, not the underground.  That said, the idea is not to halt all the dancing, as this time we are pulling out all the STOPS!

3D’s 4th Out

I’m Uncle Marty, this is chapter # 496 of The 3D RadioActivity. There are numerous Ways of Getting Out in Cricket, including Bowled, Caught, Stumped, Hit the ball twice, Hit wicket, Obstructing the Field, Timed-Out, or the Leg before Wicket, while in Baseball most are recorded in three ways… one can strike out; be tagged out; or forced out. We begin the exploration of this quest for more than the fourth OUT by looking deep between the ears.

Concert Review: King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard

There’s definitely something going on in Australia as evidenced by the recent surge in psychedelic rock bands coming from the land down under. Groups like Tame Impala, The Murlochs, Pond, and King Gizzard are the most recent exports from the country that brought us AC/DC, INXS, Little River Band, and yes, the Bee Gees.

Melbourne’s King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard have been incredibly prolific, with fifteen album since the release of their first full-length album 12 Bar Bruise in 2012.

Members of the group include Stu Mackenzie (vocals, guitar, bass, keyboards, flute), Ambrose Kenny-Smith (vocals, harmonica, keyboards), Cook Craig (guitar, bass, vocals), Joey Walker (guitar, bass, keyboards, vocals), Lucas Skinner (bass, keyboards), Michael Cavanagh (drums, percussion), and Eric Moore (drums, percussion). Kenny-Smith and Craig are also members of The Murlochs.

King Gizzard’s sound originally was garage rock, but with the ongoing output of material, they have also crafted jazz, soul, prog rock, and their latest iteration, heavy metal, with the release of Infest the Rat’s Nest.

All of these multiple personalities make for very entertaining concerts. Throughout the show, the band seemingly morphs into Metallica, T Rex, ZZ Top, or Pink Floyd. There is no standard set list. Every show is different. There might be some overlap, but the song selection and order is as varied as a Grateful Dead set list.

At their recent show at Chicago’s Aragon Ballroom, King Gizzard rocked the house for a blistering ninety-five minute, nineteen song set, that featured five tracks from their earlier 2019 release, Fishing For Fishies. That album is much more psychedelic and a boogie-woogie album. It is very reminiscent of Marc Bolan and T Rex.

Between the grinding, bumping, thumping, head banging sounds of Rats’ Nest, and the shoe gazing moments from Fishies, there was something for everyone, and the crowd loved it.

Catch this band while they are still playing medium sized venues. It won’t be long before they are selling out the large amphitheaters and the basketball arenas.

Music By The Letter On The 3D RadioActivity

As technology has diversified, posted letters have become less important as a routine form of communication; they however still remain but in a modified forms like email.  The development of the telegraph around 1792 shortened the time taken to send a letter by transferring the letter as an electrical signal between distant points, which is sort of what we are doing this time on The Award Winning 3D RadioActivity, sending you two hours of great music about this form of correspondence and more.

Letters can be the collected correspondence of a writer or historically significant person.  It is a written message containing information from one party to another. The role of letters in communication has changed significantly since the nineteenth century. Historically, letters (in paper form) were the only reliable means of communication between two people in different locations.  Letters are still used, particularly by businesses, for official notifications. This is because of three main advantages:  No special device needed – almost everybody has a residence or other place at which he or she can receive mail; “Catch-all” advertising, more commonly known as junk mail; and Physical record – important messages that need to be retained, like invoices which them can can be kept relatively easily and securely.

Additionally, a letter is part of the system of writing, such as the Greek or Russian alphabet and its descendants. Letters compose phonemes and each one represents a sound in the spoken form of the language.  Letters, as elements, have prescribed orders. This may generally be known though collation is the science devoted to the complex task of sorting of letters and words in different languages.  Here are some great examples  in a musical format.

The 3D RadioActivity One-der Show

This time on The Award Winning 3D RadioActivity, we are playing one-hit wonders, which is a person or act known mainly for only a single success. The term is most often used to describe music performers with only one hit single.  Some are the result of novelty songs during fads.  More commonly, however, these are serious-minded musicians who struggled to continue their success after their popularity waned.  Because they are popular for only a brief time, their hits often have nostalgic value and are featured on era-centric compilations and soundtracks to period films.  While normal in any era of pop music, most are common during reigns of entire genres that do not last for more than a few years, such as disco, new wave and grunge.  Though the term is sometimes used in a derogatory manner, some fans often have a great passion for these songs and the artists who created them. Some one-hit wonder artists have embraced this following openly, while others distance themselves from their hit in an attempt to craft successful songs with different sounds, or embark on new careers as songwriters.

The 3D RadioActivity One-der Show

The VH One list of the top 100 One Hit Wonders was a good starting point for this show, however more than half of the tunes they listed didn’t meet the 3D standards.  I looked at the Rolling Stone Magazine list and also consulted the Joel Whitburn book to confirm that every song on this show made it into the top 100, and that the artist did not have any others that made it over the century mark, or the bubbling under charts which are songs that did not reach the three digit area.  Some of these are very popular artists had lots of success on those listings while only managing to climb to the hallowed place once.  We did a lot of homework to make sure that this show would be up to temperature.  Sit back and enjoy, With 29 songs and over 102 minutes of music, there is plenty of One-der to go around.
