This Weekend on Acid Flashback Radio: October 23-25

Here’s what’s on Acid Flashback Radio this weekend. For more on each show, see our weekend shows page.

Friday

Acid Flashback Friday (noon ET) welcomes guest DJ Mr. Peabody, author of a number of our Songs of the Day, who takes over all three hours with a mix of deep tracks from well-known bands and quite a few psych nuggets. In the first hour you’ll hear The Beatles’ “Paperback Writer,” The Pretty Things with “Cries from the Midnight Circus,” Ten Years After’s “Over the Hill,” and The Mystic Braves with “There’s a Pain.” There’s also “Roamin’ and Ramblin'” from Aynsley Dunbar, the British drummer who powered the Retaliation and later played with John Mayall, Frank Zappa, Jeff Beck and Journey. Hour two brings Kenny Rogers & The First Edition’s “Just Dropped In,” Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Porterville,” Love Sculpture’s “In the Land of the Few,” and Family Tree’s “Birthday/Dirgeday.” It also has The Chocolate Watchband’s “Are You Gonna Be There (At the Love-In),” a San Jose garage-psych classic from 1967. The third hour has Fleetwood Mac’s “Child of Mine” and The Standells’ “Did You Ever Have That Feeling.” You’ll also hear “A Child’s Guide to Good and Evil” from The West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band, a lavishly produced Los Angeles psych outfit. The 13th Floor Elevators close out the picks with “Slip Inside This House.” Check out Today in Rock History to see what happened in the past on this day.

Saturday

Psychedelic Psaturday with DJ Kaigem (1 pm ET, replay at 11 pm ET): Eric opens this week’s show with The Flies and “I’m Not Your Stepping Stone.” The Flies were a London pop-psychedelia band, first known as No Flies on Us, and they were notorious for their live shows, including an appearance at the 14-Hour Technicolour Dream festival in April 1967. This is their freakbeat take on a song also recorded by Paul Revere & the Raiders and the Monkees. From there he moves on to Love, then New Candys, a band from Venice, Italy, and Strawberry Alarm Clock, followed by Utah’s Mellons, who sound like Pet Sounds-era Beach Boys, and The Freeborne. Eric will tell you more about these bands during the show, so tune in and turn on.

Album cover for Strawberry Alarm Clock's Incense and Peppermints, showing the band lounging in an ornate room of colorful textiles inside a red and orange floral border.

The Flower Power Hour with Ken & MJ (2 pm ET): Ken & MJ invite you to dig music by and conversation with the amazing Bruce Cockburn, including the debut of his new album, The Blood Of Others! That’s followed by a Paul Rodgers feature including Bad Co, Free, and The Firm. And after the recent passing of David Surkamp of Pavlov’s Dog, Ken & MJ revisit their 2024 conversation with him in Hour 3. Complimentary magic dust, but BYO munchies.

Sunday

Sunday Time Warp with Bart Shore (3 pm ET), Show #812: This week’s Time Warp has Ashton, Gardner & Dyke’s “Resurrection Shuffle,” Johnny Kidd & the Pirates with “Hungry for Love” and their classic “Shakin’ All Over,” and Arlo Guthrie’s “City of New Orleans.” Bart also digs up George Harrison’s “Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea,” Max Webster’s “A Million Vacations,” Steely Dan’s “Black Friday,” Stevie Wonder’s “It’s Easier,” and The Byrds’ “Chimes of Freedom.”

Psychedelic Time Warp Show #8 (4 pm ET): a generic show with Jefferson Airplane, Alice Cooper, Rick Wakeman, Triumvirat, Genesis, Santana, Black Sabbath, Echo & the Bunnymen, Van Halen, the Kinks, Traffic, Mahavishnu Orchestra, ELP, Zappa, Jethro Tull, Alan Parsons, Spirit and Amon Düül. There’s live music from Talking Heads, Pink Floyd and the Grateful Dead. Plus comedy from Steve Martin and National Lampoon.

All Hand Mixed Vinyl with Bill Fitzhugh (6 pm ET), a rerun of chapters 1 and 9: What happens when you mix the second half of side one of Yes’s Fragile with the first half of side one of Gino Vannelli’s Storm at Sunup? It’s a set you have to hear to believe, and it includes a bonus track from Spirit’s Farther Along LP. In the second half of the show we leave the prog rock behind and find a nifty acoustic guitar segue bridging Elton John with David Bowie, all complemented by Van, Cat, and Simon and Garfish. Enjoy!

The Grateful Dead Hour with David Gans (7 pm ET), Show #1987: David features the Dead’s April 30, 1977 show at the Palladium in New York City, with “Looks Like Rain,” “Mississippi Half-Step” and “Promised Land.” There’s also Bobby Weir & Wolf Bros from the Paramount in Seattle on October 23, 2022, with “Wharf Rat” into “Hell in a Bucket,” and the Jerry Garcia Band’s “Money Honey” from GarciaLive Vol. 23.

The Zecom Hour with Bart Shore (8 pm ET): This week Bart spins Rod Stewart, Stevie Wonder (including a lost track), new Neil Young, classic Leon Russell, and much more.
