Music Radio has unique advantages over streaming services.
Let’s face it. No matter how many songs you can add to your Spotify or Apple Music library, you still face the challenge of making it interesting after months of listening over and over again. Playlists can get as stale as two-day old bread.
That’s where radio, or at least the type of music radio InternetFM offers, has an advantage.
Most of the radio stations that InternetFM carries have very large music libraries. It’s not uncommon for one of our affiliate stations to have 15,000 or more songs in their on-air library. This ensures very little repetition on a day to day basis. Compare that to a lot of “classic hits” stations with a few as a 1000 playing over and over again.
In addition to the extensive libraries, stations use software to assist in building daily play lists. It is impossible to continuously program music manually. Trust me, I know. A week’s worth of music requires about two thousand songs. When I had to use a backup computer that did not have the radio software, after two days, I started cloning entire hours. By day five, I gave up and physically moved the old computer to a temporary location to access it’s programming features.
The software still allows you to add a personal touch and program the music in an entertaining way. Anyone can take their music, upload to a stream, and hit the shuffle button. At Acid Flashback, we create different tempos by placing the lighter songs in the morning, such as CSN, Cat Stevens, Three Dog Night, and Paul Simon. By the time the afternoon arrives, the mode changes to a heavier sound. That includes AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, the Clash, and ZZ Top. During the overnight hours anything goes, with a wide open playlist of songs as long as twenty-minute gems such as “Supper’s Ready” from Genesis, Pink Floyd’s “Echoes” or anything by Frank Zappa. We include jazz and blues as well. During weekends, we exclude the “hit” songs and play loads of deep cuts.
We are constantly adding new music and new artists. The record companies have done us a favor in their efforts to mine as much gold from their old artists. By releasing “deluxe” editions of albums they provide us with additional demos, alternate takes and live renditions of songs that we are more than happy to add to the on-air library.
Experience plays a big part in the music radio presentation. We take pride in returning to the days of progressive rock radio in the late sixties and early seventies when the disc jockeys had almost total control over what songs were played on the air. There was a real connection between the listener and the DJ. Nowadays the corporate takeover of traditional radio has stripped stations of their heart and soul.
Some of our station owners have twenty, thirty, or even forty years of broadcast experience. We couldn’t be happier to bring them to you, the listener, to enjoy on our app with the look and feel of a classic car radio.
