3D Volt STAX

October 30, 2020 by Marty Masters

I’m your Uncle Marty, this is The 3D RadioActivity‘s episode #558, as our STAX retrospective focus will be all singles from their VOLT division. In that era, many radio stations, anxious to avoid even the hint of payola, often refused to play more than one or two new cuts from any single record company at one time, so as to not appear to be offering favoritism to any particular one. To circumvent this, Stax, like many other industry leaders, created a number of subsidiaries. Otis Redding, Isaac Hayes, Booker T & The MG’s, the Bar-Kays, and several other artists that were initially issued by Atlantic’s Atco Records, although their home was VOLT.

Twenty singles on VOLT, most all are under the three minute standard for the sixties. The STAX Studio house band along with those I credited in the show are a group that packs enough punch to back up anyone. Satellite, Atlantic and Enterprise were other companies putting out records made at the prodigious studios, and next time we will continue our contemplation of the music that came out of that movie theater converted into one of the most fabled recording houses. If you have a title I haven’t played before, tell me by sending email, or with a message on our Facebook page which has links to the archives of all the earlier episodes and airedorable graphics in the photo section.  Look for us on Denver’s MileHiRadio,      Theacidflashback.com,  TuneIn , and  InternetFM dot com, because the best FM radio is now on the Internet.

Until we meet again, Keep Rockin’ On!
