Stax Studios, on McLemore Ave,in Memphis, was founded in 57 as Satellite Records. The company changed its name in 61 and shared its operations with Volt, a sister label created to avoid the impression of favoritism among radio stations playing their records. They also were affiliated with Atlantic, CBS, Warner, and Fantasy over the years. Influential in the creation of Southern soul music, they also released gospel, funk, and renowned blues recordings. Steve Cropper, Duck Dunn, Isaac Hayes, Booker T. Jones, Wayne Jackson, and David Porter were collectively known as the “Big Six” house band and were mainly responsible for producing almost all of the output thru the mid to late 60’s. It was founded by two siblings and business partners, Jim Stewart and his sister Estelle Axton (STewart/AXton = Stax). The average age of the love tunes this time was 55 years, and the length was just over 2 and a half minutes, my initial Stax Studios file is well over three hundred songs, so moving forward, we will continue our in depth look at the Memphis music from them and their subsidiaries.
